Working abroad
Who can benefit from my expat insurance?
If you are affiliated with the Overseas Social Security (OSS), you can include certain family members in your medical care insurance. These family members are called 'dependants'. They can enjoy the benefits of your insurance at no extra cost!
Who is eligible to be recognised as a 'dependant'?
- Your partner: if you are married or have been living together at the same address for at least 6 months.
- Your children/adoptive children/grandchildren: if they are not over 18 years old or if they are between 18 and 25 years old and are studying full-time. For the latter age group, you must submit a school certificate or apprenticeship contract every year. For your grandchildren, you must prove that they live with you.
- Your partner's children/adoptive children/grandchildren: if your partner is recognised as a dependent, the same rules apply to his or her children/adoptive children/grandchildren.
How do you add someone?
- Fill in the online form:
- Go to the 'Registration - Dependants' form.
- Send us the necessary documents. Depending on the situation, you will need to provide various documents, such as:
- a statement from your last health insurance fund or similar institution, indicating the end date of your previous insurance. We always need this statement;
- an extract from the marriage certificate or a statement from the local authorities in the case of cohabitation;
- a legalised birth certificate or adoption certificate for children born or adopted abroad. You can read how these documents should be legalised on the page Legalisation of documents on the website of the FPS Foreign Affairs (New window);
- a birth certificate or adoption certificate for your grandchildren, showing the family relationship, and documentary evidence (e.g. a certificate of legal cohabitation) that they are effectively dependent on you.
- Submit the application:
- You can fill in the form without the supporting documents, but your application will only be processed once all the documents have been received.
- Depending on your situation, additional documents or clarifications may be requested.
Please note: It is important to notify the OSS in good time of any changes in your family situation, such as marriage, birth or divorce. This ensures that your family members always have the right cover. For children who are of age, you must send the necessary certificates every year.
You can find more information on this subject on the page Add a dependant to the Medicare contract or via the Frontline.
