From now on, Overseas Social Security will also be active on social media, especially on Facebook(New window), Instagram(New window) and LinkedIn(New window). Why? In order to better respond to what expats are experiencing and what information they are looking for. For them, social media are not only important to keep in touch with their home country, it’s also a means to making new contacts in the expat country.

A familiar environment

In a recent column, Matthew Theo, an expat in India, talked about what social media means to him. For him it’s a good way to keep in touch with his country of origin. During the first days in the expat country, at difficult moments, Matthew used social media to feel closer to the home country and to look for new contacts in the expat country. ‘It's when you feel most alone in a new country, with a new culture and a new language, that you reach back for those familiar online contacts and certainties.’

From a new house to a new home

But how can an expat feel at home in their new environment? The offline network plays a major role in this. But the online network has also become an important pillar in building relationships and maintaining relations with the Belgian home front. With the help of expat associations abroad or Facebook groups where expats gather all over the world, you can find some meaning in your new environment.

Matthew Theo's full story can be found on the How has social media become an essential part of expat life page from We The Expats(New window).

Overseas social media

From now on you can find Overseas Social Security (OSS) also on Facebook(New window), Instagram(New window) and LinkedIn(New window). The main goal? To better respond to what expats are experiencing and what information needs they have. Recognisability is central to this.
